Stem cell insulin offers hope to type 1 diabetics

Cool, linkInsulin-secreting cells have been created from human embryonic stem cells for the first time, raising hopes of a limitless supply of cells that could be transplanted into people with type 1 diabetes. Emmanuel Baetge and his colleagues at Novocell in San Diego, California, used a cocktail of chemicals to coax the stem cells to form pancreatic cells. The cells produce as much insulin as normal pancreatic islet cells, but unlike adult islet cells, this doesn't appear to be regulated by sugar levels. Baetge is confident they can overcome this problem. If they succeed, the company has also developed a way to...

Is getting rid of your TV better than watching shows on the computer?

So this blog has a post about getting rid of cable service and the TV.  It mentions how you can get your fix by other means.  It's definitely informing, but some of the reasons behind why they are attempting to not use the tv just gets to me.  The main reason is to save money.  That's a good reason, but then it goes on to this.  "Practice what I’m about to teach you and you’ll save money, save electricity, save time, and be exposed less to the mass consumerism society forces through our eyeballs."Save money, sure.  Save electricity?  Doubtful.  Even...

Networks fighting DVR's?

So I'm watching a recorded Ghost Hunters show.  And I noticed that they had a poll question during the commercial.  A online tie in and an answer later in the show.  IS this what they are doing to combat people recording the show andwatching it later?  Some type of live interaction?  I think they need more than that.  Maybe voteing with the remote.

Treehuggers yet again

First of I know I'm an ass when posting, I don't deny that.  Nor do I hide my identity when I do.  Some people are cowards and assholes.  Like this Anonymous guy in this thread on Treehugger.  Talk about an elitist asshole.  In my eyes he is just as bad as me or worse.  But they think they are in the right.  I post my opinions and emotions and so does that coward, yet doesn't admit he is being immature also.  Damn I hate the Internet for it's anonymity.  Now if it were just me and the coward bickering back...

Global Warming? Ya right

It's not even mid October and it was snowing all day today.  Blizzard like.  I have about an inch or two in the back yard.  Ugh.

I want this

Now I don't really think you need a GPS on a motorcycle, well because there is no such thing as getting lost while riding.  I do think it would be cool to track where you have ridden.  Though there seems not to be a good solution to the bluetooth for helmets yet.  There is the Motorola one, but why must it sit on the outside of the helmet.  Isn't there an aftermarket solution that isn't visible from the outside?  Or minimally visible?  Guess it doesn't matter because I think this GPS will be too expensive, as usual.

recycled content garbage bags

They really kind of suck.  I bought 80% recycled kitchen garbage bags.  Besides being twice as expensive they are really thin.  Thinner than the grocery bags I get from the store.  That means not very strong.  I about lost all my garbage today trying to take it out.  If your going to make me pay twice as much at least make then decent.  Why is trying to be a little more environmentally conscious suck so much and is so expensive?

New Forum

Well I decided to start a new forum with an environmental twist here.  I posted it on hugg and minutes later someone else posts a new forum too.  Same software even.  Now with my luck of course his gets more Huggs than mine and more traffic.  Ugh oh well I knew I had bad luck starting up forums.  I guess that's what I get for clashing with everyone.

AT&T update

Well I am really impressed with their line techs.  Those are the people who actually know something.  Not the ones you get when you first call.  I had a long chat with a line tech when the person sent out to my house didn't call me before he arrived.  I of course missed him.  But later that night AT&T ( or SBC whatever they go by now ) called me and wanted to know how things were going.  They called again Saturday to see, probably because the trouble ticket was left open.  They said they could get someone out Monday...

Sunday Drive

Well Yesterday some members of my family and I went on an impromptu motorcycle ride.  Impromptu meaning only planned a week in advance or else a lot more people would have been there.  We had 6 bikes, 8 people.  Three Harley's, my Buell, and two Honda's.  It was a very nice day for a ride.  Sunny all day, mid 60's probably.  Not too hot or too cold.  This was the longest ride and probably farthest ride I've done in one day.  I was worried about my knee hurting too much.  It was fine until the last hour.  I did...
