So
this blog has a post about getting rid of cable service and the TV. It mentions how you can get your fix by other means. It's definitely informing, but some of the reasons behind why they are attempting to not use the tv just gets to me. The main reason is to save money. That's a good reason, but then it goes on to this.
"Practice what I’m about to teach you and you’ll save money, save electricity, save time, and be exposed less to the mass consumerism society forces through our eyeballs."
Save money, sure. Save electricity? Doubtful. Even if you have a laptop and a second lcd monitor. As the author stated in the comments
For instance, You have a computer that's less of an energy hog, like in iMac G5 20", which uses about 105 watts, and you're smart enough to turn it off when you're not using it. You use it for two hours a day, five days a week. That's ten hours a week, or 520 hours a year. So your 105 watts times 520 hours = 54,600 watt-hours. Divide by 1000 and you have 55 kilowatt-hours (kWh). If you're paying 10¢ per kilowatt-hour, then you're paying $5.50 a year to run your computer.
From the very quick and simple
search on the web a TV would be comparable. OF course if you want to compare apples to oranges and go the large screen HDTV's that number goes up dramatically. But then again you'd be watching TV on some 40 in screen instead of some 17 inch monitor. Now save time? Again doubtful. How much time would it take to track down your shows and install all the required software to watch them. After the initial investment and you got into the groove of things it would not be too bad. Unless you try and search a torrent site for your shows, that can be a pain, though the author was not advocating that.
I mentioned pirating in the blogs comments, I'm not sure. If all the links posted only use already available streaming video then I suppose it's ok. Now if he really wanted to push a money, energy and time saver, advocate no tv at all. It's not that hard. I did it for 6 months no problem. I did have broadband too, so i could have downloaded shows. But I did not feel the need. And not that I have television, I barely watch it. I DVR what I want and only watch that. As always there is probably no point to this rant.
